Ich habe heute ein Video von Arte entdeckt über einen Baggersee am Rhein. Klingt erstmal langweilig, aber diese Aufnahmen sind der Hammer. Sowas hat man noch nicht gesehen. Und das ist hier in Europa! Wunderschön.

Während des Tsunamis ist von Japan aus ein Boot weggespült worden. An Bord waren in einem Kasten einige Fische, Algen und Krabben eingesperrt:

 

Nach 2 Jahren Reise und über 5000 Semeilen später wurde das Boot "Saisho-Maru", bei Long Beach, Washington, USA angespült. Die 5 Stück  Oplegnathus fasciatus waren quicklebendig!

 

So weit, so rührend.

Vier der fünf Tiere sind jetzt allerdings tot. Sie wurden eingeschläfert weil sie an der US-Küste eine invasive Spezies darstellen. Der einzige Überlebende, oben abgebildet, befindet sich nun in einem Becken im Seaside Aquarium.

Da frage ich mich doch, was in den Köpfen dieser Leute vor sich geht. Schon klar, dass es keine gute Idee ist, wenn diese dort nicht vorkommende Spezies im dortigen Biotop auf Raubzug ginge. Aber der Fünfertrupp befand sich an Bord eines Bootes in einem Becken. Eingeschlossen. Die hätten auch einfach alle Fünf in das Aquarium tun können!

Ich meine, ich bin durchaus für Naturschutz und so weiter. Aber mir kommt der Fall hier irgendwie übertrieben vor.

Zuständig dafür ist ein gewisser Allen Pleus vom Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Ich hab den mal angeschrieben. Vielleicht krieg ich ja eine nähere Erklärung und ich reg mich völlig umsonst auf.

Ich hatte Alan Pleus angemailt und ihn nach den Hintergründen der Euthanisierung gefragt. Netterweise hat er geantwortet:

Thank you for your recent email message about the striped beakfish that were discovered in a boat that appears to have drifted to Washington following the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

As you have read, all but one of the fish were euthanized. This was done under the authority of Washington state law, which requires our department to move rapidly to protect Washington's environment, native species and commercial and recreational fisheries from threats posed by non-native aquatic invasive species.

The fish themselves are not a rare species (common reef fish and commercially raised in Korea), the fact that they stayed with the boat all the way to shore is the rare part. Keeping a specimen alive requires expensive quarantine facilities and a long-term intent to maintain for research or public display. Now that we know some public aquariums are interested in live species from the debris, we will try to work with them more often.

Specimens such as these beakfish have great scientific value as we attempt to understand how they could have survived such a long journey and whether they pose a threat to our state and to the entire eastern Pacific Coast. As such, we routinely analyze the characteristics of the non-native species that arrive in Washington, including their genetic signature, diet, the presence of disease or parasites.

Ultimately, we operate under the principle that it is more humane to prevent the establishment and spread of potentially invasive species - which could cause significant environmental damage and economic hardship in Washington and elsewhere - than to allow a limited number of non-native specimens to remain alive.

Gut, dann verstehe ich es. So wie das klingt, scheinen die dort ziemlich strenge Artenschutzgesetze zu haben. Doch immer wieder gut, mal über den Tellerrand zu schauen. War meine Entrüstung also ungerechtfertigt.

Jeder, der schon in den 90ern online war, kennt diesen Sound, den das analoge Modem damals gemacht hat. Man wusste zwar, dass sich da die 2 Modems "unterhalten" über irgendwelche Verbindungsparameter, aber was genau die da reden - keine Ahnung.

Oona Räisänen hat sich der Aufgabe angenommen, das ganze mal zu visualisieren. Und WIE ihr das gelungen ist, ich bin völlig von den Socken.

Ich bin jedenfalls völlig begeistert!

Heute endlich hat unsere US-Bestellung ihre Odyssee über den grossen Teich und die Tyrranei des deutschen Zolls überstanden und ist bei uns angekommen. Die Skulpturen sind von Jason Shanaman, einem Künstler aus den USA, der vorwiegend Reptilienskulturen herstellt, die in Deutschland nicht zu haben sind.

Die Stücke sind wunderschön und die Beifahrerin ist super glücklich. Anbei ein paar Aufnahmen:
